The Happy
The Happy Man (Srećan čovek)
About the book
Srećan čovek (Čigoja, 2017) is a biographical novel that follows the life of Alfred, the protagonist, from his childhood in Bitola, through his student years in pre-war Belgrade, the suffering in German officer camps, persecution by the party in post-war Yugoslavia, his failed attempt to settle in Israel, and finally, the discovery of home and personal fulfilment in Vienna. This novel offers a vivid panorama of the 20th century, skillfully blending evocative details of characters and places where the line between reality and fiction is blurred. Authentic photographs integrated into the text further enhance the sense of realism.
The book tackles weighty themes such as the horrors of war, poverty, religious dilemmas, marital decline, and disappointment in one’s children. Yet, these subjects are presented with deep emotion and a touch of humour. Alfred’s internal life and his relentless struggle to lead a successful, moral, and happy life are laid bare through profound reflections. With the strength of his intellect, Alfred Melamed breaks free from the chains that have held him back, allowing him to blossom once more. By the end of his long journey, he realizes that he has lived a rich and dignified life—a truly happy man. As such, he serves as an inspiration to all who seek to live meaningful and fulfilled lives.
