The Happy

The Happy Man (Srećan čovek)

About the book

Srećan čovek (Čigoja, 2017) is a biographical novel that follows the life of Alfred, the protagonist, from his childhood in Bitola, through his student years in pre-war Belgrade, the suffering in German officer camps, persecution by the party in post-war Yugoslavia, his failed attempt to settle in Israel, and finally, the discovery of home and personal fulfilment in Vienna. This novel offers a vivid panorama of the 20th century, skillfully blending evocative details of characters and places where the line between reality and fiction is blurred. Authentic photographs integrated into the text further enhance the sense of realism.

The book tackles weighty themes such as the horrors of war, poverty, religious dilemmas, marital decline, and disappointment in one’s children. Yet, these subjects are presented with deep emotion and a touch of humour. Alfred’s internal life and his relentless struggle to lead a successful, moral, and happy life are laid bare through profound reflections. With the strength of his intellect, Alfred Melamed breaks free from the chains that have held him back, allowing him to blossom once more. By the end of his long journey, he realizes that he has lived a rich and dignified life—a truly happy man. As such, he serves as an inspiration to all who seek to live meaningful and fulfilled lives.

a terrible biography. In the final scene of the book, in a home for the elderly in Vienna, the main character says to himself 'I am a happy man'. There, in fact, is the main question: what is a happy man? ... Man one never knows, while reading this book, if he is reading a story about a real hero or if everything is made up. Peđa Ristić skillfully put it together

In the beginning, I had some objections, but when "The Man" took me all the way, I gave up because, compared to the book as a whole, they are completely banal. Instead, I ended up crying like rain. (I usually react like that when something really touches me!). Congratulations from the bottom of my heart and I can't wait for the new novel. And I will give this one to my dear friends.

The book seems somehow cinematic to me, this was to me instead of an HBO series, but not in an American way, but in a British way... While reading the book, I often went to YouTube and searched for some of the songs mentioned in the book, some songs I had never heard before heard, so I let them follow me, with a book.

Alfred had a hard enough, complicated and uncertain life that he could use as a cover for resentment, anger and unkindness, but he understood that happiness is a path without which a man is lost, and every wise man watches his own path. The book "Srećan čovek", which can be read in one breath, is a journey that will encourage you to think about whether you live in accordance with the definitions of happiness, for example Jovan Dučić, who says "Whoever thinks he is happy, he is really happy " or the Dalai Lama "Happiness is determined by the state of our spirit, not events." That just worked for Alfred.

The book carries energy that you feel through a great storytelling style, simple, direct and emotionally personally dosed. Peđa Ristić told us, through a short story about the life of the main character Alfredo, that happiness is not the goal, but the path. A path on which, regardless of everything that awaits us, surprises, discourages and disappoints, we must preserve the joy of life and kindness towards other people, which will certainly make the path to achieving wisdom and discovering spirituality easier. One of the main messages of the novel is that happiness is not a moment to wait for, and then logically see off, it is not a current state, but a state of our spirit that we need to work on. The sooner we understand that, the better our chances are to become the happy man from the novel of the same name.
